Drawn wire leaves the die with a bright or matte finish depending on the die and lubricant. Soap coated wire carries a drawing lubricant that helps cold heading and springing but must be cleaned for food, medical and welding use. Electropolished wire has the smoothest, cleanest surface.
Welding wire is often copper-free with a controlled surface to feed smoothly through liners. Cold heading wire carries a lime, phosphate-free or polymer coating suited to the forging press. Mesh weaving wire needs a consistent, dry surface.
Ask for the finish and the coating type by name, and say what the wire will be used for, so the supplier can match lubricant to the next process.
